Phantom Menace wouldn’t give us our first on-screen look at Coruscant for another three years, and while the Thrawn Trilogy is partly set there, it doesn’t provide a lot of information about the planet itself. I think it’s also really cool that we get our first in-depth look at Coruscant in this book. I thought it was the coolest part of the book. We were given their thoughts on current galactic situations as well as some world-building notes.

Seeing members like Gavin, who was basically a background character in the first book, going undercover in their POV chapters allowed us to see both how they were reacting to and melding with their new identities, as well as the person underneath. This book could also be called The Rest of the Squadron Gets Some Character Development. Immediately I liked this book better than Rogue Squadron, which is not to say that I didn’t enjoy Rogue Squadron, I just appreciated having the Rogues already established as badasses instead of having to earn the title. We’re told in the first book that the Rogues consistently pull of impossible missions, but we’re not given a ton of evidence of that until Wedge’s Gamble. I can’t believe I had never heard of these books, and it’s even more egregious that they never saw hardcover releases (although as fun and action-packed as these books are, having a big stack of them in mass market paperback is very charming- they’re a bit like old dime novels in that sense). This series is more and more revealing itself to be an under-recognized gem of the Legends world. I continue on through the X-Wing series with Wedge’s Gamble.
